Meet Jerry Alcorn: A Story of Resilience and Innovation
When you meet Jerry Alcorn, the first thing you might notice is his tattoos or his big welcoming smile. What you might not immediately see is that Jerry has paraplegia. With no feeling below his waist, he is one of less than 2% of paraplegics who can walk—a “walking paraplegic” as he puts it.
“I completely retrained my body and mind to walk after being paralyzed,” Jerry explains. His incredible journey began after a life-changing injury in 2014 when a tractor fell on him at a construction site. Despite the immense pain and a crumpled spine, Jerry’s spirit remained unbroken.
“I heard a lot about what I could no longer do during recovery,” Jerry recalls. “Instead of being discouraged, I took it as a challenge. I don’t like to hear the word ‘no.’”
A Journey of Recovery and Discovery
Jerry’s journey took a pivotal turn at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. With the support of the Desert Ability Center, he slowly regained his mobility. It was during a cycling trip with the DAC that he experienced a significant setback—his bike broke down far into the East Valley, and he realized the lack of local repair shops for adaptive bikes.
“There must be a better way,” Jerry thought. His solution was to start repairing adaptive bikes himself. Beginning in his garage, his reputation for excellence spread quickly, leading to the official opening of Alcorn Adaptive Bike and Mobility Shop in 2020.
A Community Hub for Mobility Solutions
Jerry’s expertise and hands-on skills have made his shop a crucial resource for people from all over Southern California and even from around the world. “There was nothing like this in the whole Inland Empire,” Jerry notes. “People used to have to go to Los Angeles to get a bike fixed.”
At our shop, you’ll find a diverse array of bikes, each tailored to meet unique needs. Jerry lives for those transformative moments when he helps someone find the perfect fit, restoring their confidence and autonomy.
“All the time, people come in devastated that they can’t go out fishing or camping ever again,” Jerry says. “Yes, you can. I can show you how.”
Beyond Business: A Mission to Inspire
Jerry doesn’t consider himself a businessman. “I stand behind my name and my work,” he says. “If I do good work and help people, the business will come.” And it has.
His dedication goes beyond just repairing bikes. Jerry is a visible presence in the community, demonstrating to others what they can achieve despite their limitations. “There are no limits,” he insists.
At Alcorn Adaptive Bike and Mobility Shop, we are not just about bikes; we are about making a difference, one ride at a time. Join us in our mission to enhance mobility and enrich lives.
